Search operation: Two militant commanders killed in Mohmand

Ammunition including heavy RPG shells, IEDs as well as ATM cards of murdered polio monitoring workers recovered

PESHAWAR: Two militant commanders were killed on Monday during a search operation by security forces in Mohmand Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

According to the political administration, the special operation group was patrolling in Qandhari area of Safi at midnight between Sunday and Monday when militants opened fire at them from their hideout.

“In retaliation, the forces opened fired on militants holed up inside the hideout and killed two commanders – Haq Nawaz and Mohsin,” said an official.

He said the forces also recovered from the hideout a heavy cache of ammunition, including heavy RPG shells, improvised explosive devices, hand grenades, detonators, batteries as well as ATM cards of murdered polio monitoring workers.

“Bodies of the militants were shifted to Ghallanai,” he said, adding that further investigations into the incident were under way.

Last week, two polio monitoring team workers were shot dead by unidentified militants, who had first abducted them along with other members of their team from the same area. After the incident, the security forces had started search operations and the last night’s raid was part of these operations.
