KARACHI: Four young friends arrested by the police in connection with possessing arms admitted their involvement in sexually assaulting and blackmailing girls in Karachi.

The four suspects, later identified as Daniyal Ahmed Mangi, Afaq Ahmed, Asad Niazi and Ghufran, were arrested by the Samanabad police in District Central. The police also claim to have recovered a submachine gun and two pistols as well as videos from their mobile phones.

A raid was conducted at a local public park after information was received that some suspects were present there, said SHO Amir Azam. He added that the police raided the park and arrested the suspects and seized weapons from their possession.

The officer said that the suspects arrested are residents of Defence Housing Authority and Azizabad and are students aged between 22 and 25 years. He added that one of them is the son of a doctor, another the son of a contractor and one is a close relative of a political party leader.

Naming rape victims; court seeks explanation

"We had no idea about their involvement in gang rapes at the time of the arrest,” explained the officer. "But the videos found on their mobile phones revealed their involvement in sexually assaulting girls."

The officer, referring to the initial investigations, said that this four-member group of friends used to form friendships with the girls and later sexually assaulted and blackmailed them through illicit videos.

So far, the men have confessed to raping at least three girls at farmhouses but as the complainants are not approaching the police to register cases, the police have booked the suspects for possessing illegal weapons.

SHO Azam said that no legal documents or licences were provided by the accused persons for the weapons. They were produced before a court where the court sent them to jail custody. Further investigation is under way.
