Nearly 4.5 million passengers transit through Dubai International Airport per month

Transiting passengers could soon be allowed to tour the Persian Gulf hot spot.

Under the proposal presented on Tuesday by Dubai Airports, passengers in transit will be encourage to explore the city. "In Dubai, transit time will become tourism as passengers are encouraged to leave the airport to experience the city," the Dubai Media Office tweeted.

In a video posted on Twitter, the Dubai Airports office tweeted that, the Microcosm of Dubai project proposes city-wide itineraries for passengers in transit for over four hours. Those in transit for under four hours could experience a "virtual tour" of the city.



Nearly 4.5 million passengers transit through Dubai International Airport per month. The number an annual figure of 50 million. Of these, an approximate 46 million do not visit the city.

Earlier, Dubai International Airport was named the world’s busiest for international passengers in 2017 for the fourth year running with 88.2 million travelers. A major transit hub situated on transcontinental air routes, Dubai is one of several Persian Gulf airports to have registered remarkable growth over the years.
