KARACHI: Cinema has become a provincial subject after the 18th Amendment and the Sindh government will be organising film festivals to promote the industry.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said this on Friday in his presidential speech at 'Karachi Sub Ka - Asia Peace Film Festival', organised by the culture department in collaboration with the information department at Karachi Expo Centre. Earlier, the CM inaugurated the four-day festival which will end on Monday.

The theme of the festival, 'Karachi Sub Ka [Karachi for everyone]', was an appealing theme, Murad said, adding that Karachi had a pluralistic society and the city welcomed every one irrespective of their race. The CM urged the city residents to own Karachi as doing so would foster fraternity among people speaking different languages and believing in different religions.

Over 50 countries are participating in the festival, at which more than 109 films would be screened, he said. "[The festival will prove] good for sharing technologies, scripts and filming techniques, and exploring the film market in different countries," he added.

"I feel proud to see events like the literary festival, food festival, film festival, musical programmes, literary sittings and such other programmes in a city that was once the target of terrorists, mafias, outlaws and gangsters," Murad remarked. "Today Karachi is emerging as a city of peace, tranquility, trade, industry and a seat of learning."
