Accomplice in Asma murder case confesses to facilitating key suspect’s escape

Shahzab has been given on a 14-day judicial remand after his one day physical remand ended today

PESHAWAR: An accomplice of the prime suspect in the Asma Rani murder case has confessed to facilitating the escape of Mujahid Afridi, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) police said.

The accomplice, Shahzab, also admitted that he supplied a 30-bore pistol used by Mujahid to kill Asma, a third year MBBS student in Ayub Medical College who had named Afridi as her killer in a statement before her death.

A doctor to be, Asma was killed in Kohat last month after she allegedly refused a marriage proposal from Mujahid.

Police have also confiscated the motorcycle used by the suspect and brother during the crime and the car Mujahid used for his escape.

Shahzab has been given on a 14-day judicial remand after his one day physical remand ended today. Kohat police arrested Shahzab on Saturday.

One of the accused in the murder case, Sadiqullah, disclosed to the Kohat police during interrogation that driver Shahzeb had aided and facilitated in escape after committing the offence.

Sadiqullah was nominated in first information report (FIR) No.20 U/S 302/34 dated January 27 2018. He revealed during interrogation that Shahzeb had helped Mujahi.

Last week, reports surfaced that Mujahid had fled to Saudi Arabia, with police approaching the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to bring him back through the Interpol.

Rani was on vacation in her hometown Kohat when the incident happened, Kohat Development Authority police station SHO Gul Janan said.

When she and her sister-in-law reached home, Mujahid, accompanied by his brother opened fire on her as she got out of a rickshaw and fled the crime scene, the police official said.

She was shot thrice and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she scummed to injuries, SHO Janan said.
