Inaugural ceremony postponed due to minister's death

KARACHI: The much-awaited Sindh Healthcare Commission, an autonomous regulatory authority to ensure quality of healthcare in the province, started its operations on Thursday, announced the commission's chairperson, Prof Dr Tipu Sultan.

Dr Sultan made the announcement at a ceremony which had to be cut short due to the death of provincial minister Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani and his wife. Fateha was offered for the departed souls at the ceremony.

Dr Sultan announced that Health Minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro and Health Secretary Dr Fazlullah Pechuho, who were expected to attend the ceremony, had to change their plans due to Bijarani's death and, therefore, the ceremony was postponed.

The Sindh Healthcare Commission chairperson, however, announced that the commission had started functioning. Calling the commission's formation a milestone for patients and healthcare providers, Dr Sultan said the commission would help both patients and those providing healthcare facilities.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the commission's chief executive officer, Dr Minhaj A Qidwai, said the forms for licensing and registration of healthcare establishments and complaints were available at the commission's office at Doctors Plaza near Do Talwar.
