ISLAMABAD: The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has set up a separate counter at its main campus for differently-abled persons in an effort to facilitate them in their educational pursuits.

The AIOU provides free education as part of its policy to accommodate marginalised sections of society, according to a statement issued by the varsity on Thursday.

This is the very first time in the varsity's history that it has been given special treatment in availing the educational amenities.

The step was taken on the instructions of Vice-Chancellor Shahid Siddiqui and shall come into effect by the start of Spring semester this year.

The differently-abled will be fully assisted in the admission's process, the communique read.

The university also plans to establish these counters at the 44 regional offices of AIOU nationwide.

Earlier, on the initiative of the VC, AIOU established accessibility centres for visually impaired persons at its main campus and the regional offices.
