Standing committee visits PU Centre for Coal Technology

Life Sciences Dean appreciates efforts of Department of Zoology for excellence achieved in research, development

LAHORE: A high-level delegation of National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Reforms has visited Punjab University Centre for Coal Technology at New Campus on Wednesday.

The delegation was headed by its Chairman Malik Abdul Majeed Khan while Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Moeen Nasir, members of National Assembly, deans of various faculties and administrative officers were also present on the occasion. Director Centre for Coal Technology Prof Dr Shahid Munir briefed the delegation regarding various academic and power projects of the centre.

Earlier, Dr Nasir gave a detailed briefing to the delegation about the university and the major initiatives taken by the incumbent administration. Majeed lauded Dr Nasir on the promotion of research culture in the university and said that the government would extend all-out support for developing industry-academia linkages and would encourage academic activities.

Fish point opens for research

Moreover, Punjab University Department of Zoology has started a fish sale point at its new campus. PU had established Fish Research Farms on 6 acres for the purpose of thesis research, practical training and demonstration studies for students.

The surplus fish from these farms were offered to the university teaching community and staff on subsidised governmental rates. Fresh and live fish was sold at the Fish Sale Point New Campus once a week.

While inaugurating the fish sale point, Faculty of Life Sciences Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan appreciated the efforts of the Department of Zoology for the excellence achieved in research and development in the applied sectors of fisheries, wildlife and zoo management, biodiversity conservation, agriculture entomology, microbiology and biomedical sciences including biotechnology.

He appreciated the Department of Zoology for initiating industrial linkages with fisheries sector for training and transfer of modern fish farming technologies for aquaculture and rural development in the country.

Zoology Department Chairman Prof Dr Javed Iqbal Qazi highlighted the various academic achievements of his department and congratulated Fish Research Farm Incharge Dr Hafiz Abdullah Shakir for record production of fish from research farms. A large number of teaching staff and graduate students, researchers and support staff from the Department of Zoology attended the inaugural ceremony and purchased the fish.

Furthermore, Punjab University Institute of Communication Studies will organise a lecture on “Role of Media in Food Safety and Health Awareness” on Thursday at11am at its premises. Punjab Food Authority Director General Noorul Amin Mengal will throw light on the topic.
