Opponents scared of Sharif, says Maryam

Rana Sanaullah says resignation out of question

LAHORE: Maryam Nawaz has said that all political opponents of the PML-N have lost their importance and are just worth a used tissue paper, expressing the hope that her father, ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, would win the next general elections and restore justice.

Addressing a ceremony held to hand over lease papers of DAV hostels in her mother’s constituency, NA-120 Lahore, Maryam said that the government had restored the lease of the hostels which was withdrawn by a dictator in 2005. She maintained that Sharif had taken personal interest for providing these rights to the people, and the fear of his father was perturbing the opponents.

Criticising the court cases against her family, Maryam called the NAB court proceedings ‘funny’ and said the prosecution witnesses told the court that they did not know why they had come there. The witnesses were unable to interpret the documents handed over to them, she said, adding that they informed the court that they had just been handed over the documents and knew nothing.

If anyone was showing patience, it was Sharif: Maryam

During a proceeding, she claimed, she heard a witness conceding that no irregularity had taken place in case of Nawaz Sharif. She remarked that the cases against her father were opened several times but nothing was found.

Maryam said that the adversaries of Sharif were scared of him and with every move of his their fear was increasing. She claimed that no speech or a meeting of the PML-N opponents was complete without mentioning the name of ‘Nawaz Sharif’.

In a veiled reference to the participation of the PTI and the PPP at an all parties conference called by PAT chief Tahirul Qadri, she said the disqualification of her father had forced the political opponents who did want to see each other’s face sit together.

Nawaz's opponents nothing more than tissue paper: Maryam

The ousted PM’s daughter criticised the formation of the Joint Investigation Team against her father and said everyone knew how it came into being. She said in Sharif’s case, the court had given the verdict on prima facie basis. She asserted such a verdict was given against a person who had been in business for generations whereas the court, despite having ‘clear-cut’ evidences did not give verdict against a person (Imran Khan) who had never been in business, whose father was expelled on charges of corruption and whose expenditures were borne by the K-P government, despite being an MNA only.

She accused Khan of lying to the court and said despite his accepting the ownership of an offshore company, the court favored him and declared him Sadiq and Amin (honest and righteous). She said her father was dismissed on the basis of an iqama, or a foreign work permit, whereas everyone knew that iqama was just meant for visa purpose.

Counting on the achievements of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam claimed her father had fulfilled the promises he made during the elections of 2013 of eliminating terrorism and load shedding, improving economic conditions in the country, restoring peace in Karachi, starting CPEC, constructing motorways, initiating metro buses, Green Line and Orange Train. She said despite having fulfilled all the promises Nawaz Sharif was not declared 'Sadiq and Amin'.

Sharif tried to fool the nation: SC

She said when the opponents could not find anything against her father, they made lame excuses and tried to hide behind the umpire’s finger.

On the other hand, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the opposition’s demand for his resignation would not be fulfilled before the upcoming general elections. He said that Sharif brothers 'do not need any NRO', rubbishing rumours in the context. Sanaullah insisted that the prevailing political situation had increased the popularity of the ousted PM and people would bring him back to power in the elections of 2018.
