Labour Day will be observed in the twin cities by a host of trade unions, student groups and left-wing political parties.

A press release issued by the Workers Party Pakistan on Wednesday said that their aim is to “revive the labour movement and remind the ruling classes that they cannot continue to tow the agenda of the international financial institutions” and ignore the working masses.

A “Mazdoor Mela” will be organised at the Railways Loco Shed Colony in Rawalpindi, in which well-known singers will perform.

On May 1, a rally will be organised that will start at Zero Point and culminate at Aabpara Chowk. Hundreds of workers from different government and private organisations are expected to participate in the rally.

Aasim Sajjad, political activist, professor and one of the organisers of the rally, said, “May Day has lost its significance because pro-government pocket unionists now dominate the worker’s movement.”

However, he noted that the recent creation of the Anti-Privatisation Alliance indicated that some measure of rehabilitation of the labour movement was taking place.
