KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) directed on Thursday Malir SSP Rao Anwar to personally appear to explain the efforts made by the police for the recovery of Zafar alias Phoolwala who has been missing since July 31.

SHC Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh, who headed a two-judge bench, was hearing a petition seeking Zafar’s whereabouts.

The judges were told that personnel in civil clothes belonging to a law enforcement agency had taken away Zafar from alFalah neighbourhood of Malir on July 31 this year.

It was alleged that his family approached the police station concerned, but the officials failed to locate the whereabouts of the missing persons. Zafar’s family apprehended that he might have been killed in a fake encounter.

Therefore, it had pleaded to the court to order the provincial home secretary, the Sindh inspector-general of police, the Karachi AIG, SSP Anwar and others to locate the missing person and produce him in the court of law.

On the last hearing, the judges had directed SSP Anwar to recover the alleged missing person and submit a compliance report in the court.

During Thursday’s proceedings, the investigation officer of the case filed a report, stating that efforts were made to locate the alleged missing person, but his whereabouts had yet to be determined.

CJ Sheikh found out that the investigation officer had submitted the old report and changed the date of submission.

The top provincial judge questioned who will protect the citizens if the police work in such a manner.

The bench expressed its dissatisfaction over the report and directed SSP Anwar to personally appear in court to explain what measures had been taken for the missing person’s recovery. The next date of the hearing will be later notified by the office.
