KARACHI: Dust and haze has taken over the cold and intense Siberian winds that were keeping the city unusually cool for the past couple of days. The haze resulted in reduced visibility on Saturday.

According to the Meteorological office in Karachi, winds that brought unusual cold for the past three days peaked at 50 kilometres per hour on Saturday, creating great haze in different parts of the city, especially in towns that lie in the outskirts of the metropolis.

The temperature is likely to drop as low as 10°C today (Sunday) with strong winds coupled with dust and haze. The recent cold spell is likely to continue till Tuesday after which the weather will remain moderately cold.

Karachiites welcome the weather

The cold wave has led people towards shops providing different varieties of soup. The savoury item is a delight to the taste buds during the chilly weather. In addition to chicken broth, chicken corn soup and quail soups are served in various parts of the city and boiled eggs are added to enhance the flavor.

A high demand for Chinese cuisine during the winters leaves eateries and fish markets being packed. Hassan Square is the main fish market of the city where different raw and fried fish are put up for sale. Dumplings rich in cashews, walnuts, khoa, almond and pistachios also have a great demand during this time of the year. Gajrela, a traditional dessert, is another hot item in winters.
