The Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA), in a statement issued on Monday, demanded of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to appoint a permanent vice chancellor at the university. The PUASA members asked the chief minister to intervene and issue orders to this effect.
According to the statement, "For this, we demand that the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) issue the advertisement in newspapers immediately. Timely issuance of the advertisement will ensure that legal requirements for the appointment can be made in time and all required stages of the appointment process can be completed."

The statement said that because of the lack of a permanent head of the institution, the Punjab University was lagging behind in academic and research activities. It added that the PUASA, in this regard, had previously passed a resolution. "Once again, the association strongly demands that to get Punjab University out of an uncertain situation, the government should issue the advertisement as soon as possible."
"Furthermore, some individuals have been trying, through backdoors, to get themselves appointed as the vice chancellor or ad-hoc vice chancellor. The teachers of the Punjab University and the association will oppose all such illegal and immoral moves. The association will stand against any act that is illegal," the statement added.
The Punjab government, on the other hand, has prepared the names of search committee members for each of the university where the vice chancellors are to be appointed, including the Punjab University.
