People distribute food, sweets, halwa to share joys of Eid Miladun Nabi

ISLAMABAD: As Muslims are fully prepared to celebrate the religious festival of Eid Miladun Nabi (PBUH) on Friday, demand for traditional sweets and foods too have shot up in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

As per South Asian traditions, most of the people distribute sweet desserts on the occasion.

Celebrations: Love for food or food for love?

Like other festivities, food is an important part of this occasion as well. Usually large quantity of something sweet or savoury is prepared and shared with the family, friends neighbours and the unprivileged.

Many people prepare national food, biryani, for distribution in Milad processions; others set up stalls of sweet milk, sherbet and tea for free distribution among the faithful.

“I for one always look forward to the ‘durood walay chawal’ on this particular day,” said Mariya Suleman a housewife.

Sweet vermicelli, though linked to Eidul Fitr, is also a delight to have on Milad. It is simple to cook and doesn’t take much time as well, said Sobia Alam a school teacher.

“I like zarda (coloured sweet rice ), the most commonly made dish on all religious occasions in Pakistan, I still remember the cauldron full of sweet aromatic rice or ‘zarday ki deg’ my grandmother use to prepare on every Eid Miladun Nabi,” said Hina Javed an office worker.

Another hot favourite on the occasion is ‘suji ka halwa’ that especially cooked in most of the houses on large scale to share their joy,
she added.

“Miladun Nabi is a big festival for us. We celebrate it with our family and friends. On this occasion, we make food and sweets and later we participate in the Milad procession,’’ Hanif Kazi, a shopkeeper and community mobiliser, said.
