PM should resign immediately, demands Imran Khan

PTI chief also demands resignation of interior and law ministers over Faizabad fiasco

ISLAMABAD: The government’s crackdown on protestors in Islamabad has brought the country on the brink of disaster and prime minister and interior minister must resign immediately for mishandling the precarious situation, PTI chief Imran Khan demanded on Sunday.

He also said that federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid should also step down and admit his responsibility in the episode.

“The Sharif’s puppet Prime Minister and interior minister must resign at once. They mishandled a situation that could have been dealt with in a timely and prudent manner,” said a PTI statement quoting its chief as saying.



Khan said because of the mishandling of Islamabad protest, the entire country was engulfed in a crisis.

Accusing the government of backtracking from its promise, he said that it had previously pledged to publicise the report compiled by Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq on the issue of changes in Khatam-e-Nabuwat clause.

“This was also demanded by Chief Minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif,” Khan said.

“By backtracking on this position, and allowing the highly sensitive issue to fester and then carrying out an operation that ended in disaster and led to violence spreading across the country, the PM and interior minister have brought the country to the brink of disaster,” the Khan said.

According to him, this had resulted in death and destruction across the country and a number of people had been killed, hundreds others injured and public and private properties were destroyed.

The PTI chief said by not exposing those responsible, the government had also created doubts that it was hiding something more sinister.



“Dawn Leaks was a deliberate attempt to reiterate the Indian narrative of maligning the Pakistan Army … the question is whether the Khatm-i-Nabuwat issue was deliberately created and allowed to linger to play to another powerful lobby cultivated by international forces?” Khan questioned.

He said the government was obsessed with “saving the Sharif mafia and their corruption” even at the cost of destabilising the country and undermining its democratic structures.

PTI, Khan said, would not allow the prevailing unrest to linger.

Imran Khan was scheduled to address a public meeting in Mansehra on Sunday but it was postponed because of the law and order situation.
