Indian foreign minister to attend SCO summit in Russia

Swaraj will also have bilateral meetings with several leaders on the sidelines of the summit

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Russia, the ministry announced here on Thursday.

"Swaraj will be representing India at the SCO summit in Russia's Sochi city on November 30 and December 1," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told media Thursday.

The minister will also have bilateral meetings with several leaders on the sidelines of the summit and attend a reception to be hosted by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, he said.

"We attach special significance to the SCO in promoting political, economic and people-to-people contacts," the spokesperson said.

India had been an observer at SCO since 2005 and became a full member in June this year. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed this year's summit in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
