Sanjiv Kumar, a 35 year old man, strangled his wife, Suman, during a fight on Tuesday.

Kumar confessed to the heinous act committed after he was arrested, police officer Ramesh Jaglan told the BBC.

The crime occurred in Haryana's Jogna Khera village, where Kumar had been living with his wife and two children for more than a decade.

“Suman refused to have sex with her husband, who irritated Kumar and thus, he strangled her”, said Jaglan.

For more than a decade, domestic violence has been the most reported violent crime against women in India. Every five minutes, a case is reported to the police, but activists say the actual numbers are even higher.

In 2005, a new law to protect women from domestic violence was introduced, but it failed as cases registered under the law are not treated as criminal.

BBC’s Geeta  Pandey in Delhi says, Patriarchy is the root cause of domestic violence, which considers women inferior. Abuse of women is highly condoned and arguments are often made for its justifications.
