Anti-climax: Controversial wicket-keeper returns home

LAHORE:

Pakistan’s absconding wicket-keeper Zulqarnain Haider has ended his exile and landed in Pakistan, apparently after Interior Minister Rehman Malik assured him of proper security.

“I came back after the minister assured me that my family and I will be provided security,” Haider told reporters in Islamabad, following his meeting Malik and Sports Minister Shaukatullah.

He insisted that he had good reasons for having abruptly left the country, leaving a cryptic status message on his Facebook profile. “I had a potentially growing career with the Pakistan team when I took the decision. No sensible person would sacrifice his career like this without any reason,” he said, adding that he will assess what the scenario is before making cricketing plans. Haider, along with his family, met Malik at his office in Islamabad. Malik told reporters that Haider will be provided full security as promised. “He is free to go anywhere as he is the citizen of Pakistan,” said Malik.

PCB unconcerned

Meanwhile, the PCB has distanced itself from Haider’s decision to return.

After Haider disappeared, the board had formed a fact-finding committee which failed to find the reason the wicket-keeper decided to flee. The board then terminated Haider’s contract and held back his match fees as he kept avoiding the committee’s officials and the matter was buried within the board.  According to the board, he will now have to go through a disciplinary process.

Riaz | 13 years ago | Reply I always believed Zulqui. Pakistan team is in the clutches of bookies and the whole board is knee deep in it. They were trying to blame him instead of helping him. If you really think India won against Pakistan and Sri Lanka on merit you live on another planet. Why would you think Gul was so stressed and some others didn't play well because they wanted to play for Pakistan again. Anyone who doesn't follow rules goes to wilderness of never playing again. Did you notice how many players like Sarfaraz are tried but despite good showing never seen again? India Sri Lanka was fixed as well and the whole selectors and team was almost disbanded by the authorities and you could see Malinga didn't want to kill the indian team which he is capable of doing any day. He can take a wicket in his sleep. He wanted to play in IPL. I guarantee malinga can out five indians with in five overs any day any match anywhere any time he chooses to.Pakistan on the other hand is rotten to the core and it goes always to the top. Have you seen Razaq play so poorly on an important match like this is just one example. Sialkot gang will tell you how malik and akmals got rich but they wont. it will be all hush hush just like semi final that india wanted so did icc and condition for resuming sports ties. Beggers ( Pak/SL) can never bee choosers i have heard and seem how sri lankan team went for the money instead of glory. they had the watch but chose to give it away, one person malinga was the main reason.
Hassan | 13 years ago | Reply Haider doe's have a point about a career in Pakistan cricket, why would he sacrifice that ? we are all living off snippets of news and hearsay and maligning this man without any concrete evidence. As far as being loyal to Pakistan and having " GHAIRAT " and letting our pure country down etc etc and many comments asking this question, Pakistanis in general are doing a very good P R ( public relations ) job without Haider, So please get off the sanctimonious high horses.
