WASHINGTON: The US military will use armed drones over Libya, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday, calling them a "modest contribution" to international coalition efforts there.

Gates said the decision to use unmanned drones armed with missiles was made "because of the humanitarian situation" in Libya, where strongman Moamer Qaddafi's forces are battling a Western-backed insurgency.

General James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the unmanned aircraft will be useful because of "their ability to get down lower, therefore to be able to get better visibility on (targets), particularly targets now that have started to dig themselves into defensive positions."

Cartwright said the drones "are uniquely suited" for the mission in Libya for use on a 24-hour basis in urban areas, and to limit collateral damage.

Gates added: "They give you a capability that even the A10 (anti-tank aircraft) and AC130 (ground attack aircraft) couldn't provide" in the conflict in the North African nation.

Two drones were to be over Libya starting Thursday but that deployment was delayed due to poor weather, Cartwright said.

Gates said that the deployment represents "a very limited additional role on our part," in Libya but argued that it did not mean "mission creep" for the United States.

Ashutosh | 13 years ago | Reply Elections are being held at regular intervals in the state of Jammu & Kashmir both at state level and national level. These are not just free and fair but international observers and media too has full access to the entire process. Over the years increasing number of Kashmiris are participating in these election processes despite regular calls by separatists to boycott them and being threatened by the Pakistan based terrorists. If you just study the elections and their fairness, you may find it difficult to stick to you point of "atrocities" in Kashmir. Referendum, it is not justified in the current world order. Just to elaborate are you ready to hold referendum for Baluchistan or Waziristan or Fata? How about Sindh? Even if you are very confident that Sindh will vote for Pakistan, do you think Pakistan will ever hold referendum? Like there is not justification for asking for referendum for various provinces of Pakistan, J & K too is one such province of India.
Maria | 13 years ago | Reply @Ashutosh: Why don't you ask the United States to start drone attacks in India to stop atrocities against Kashmiris. After all, they have been denied the right to vote for freedom in a United Nations mandated referendum and they have been terrorized for over 60 years by India.
