ISLAMABAD: The government on Thursday questioned the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to dispose of the contempt case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan after he submitted a written apology.

Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb wondered how a person “habitual of targeting the state institutions” had been let off.

“How come Imran was given a reprieve despite the fact that he had been consistently targeting the state institutions,” she exclaimed.

The ECP disposed of the contempt case against Khan on Thursday after he turned up before the ECP bench and apologised in writing over his critical remarks against the commission in January this year.

“We are utterly shocked how his [Imran Khan] apology has been accepted as he has not only targeted parliament but also used abusive language against state institutions,” Aurangzeb said, referring to the PTI chief’s speeches during the 2014 sit-in outside parliament.

The minister mocked at the PTI chief by suggesting that the proceedings against him had just begun.

“His disqualification and conviction are not far away,” she added in reference to the assets case against the PTI chief in the Supreme Court.
