Last year, when Snap's spectacles entered the market people rushed to buy them from the yellow vending machines across countries.

The hype didn't last long though as Snap reportedly has a number of pieces that are lying unsold in a Chinese warehouse, according to The Information.

Priced at $129.99, Spectacles was primed to deliver where the Google glass failed. Turns out, Spectacles popularity wasn't much different.

It was the company’s first venture into the hardware market and the glasses featured a single button which users tapped to start recording a video. Spectacles are believed to record a much wider video compared to a typical smartphone.

The company has sold “over 150,000 units” since the launch in September last year and has broken all records in comparison to the original iPod,  according to Evan Spiegel, Snap's CEO.

"Our view is that hardware is going to be an important vehicle for delivering our customer experience maybe in a decade," commented Spiegel.

He further added, "But if we believe it's going to be important in a decade, we don't want to be starting a decade from now."

It was a missed opportunity by Snapchat where the shortage of the hardware with the product not being available online until February 2017 led to nothing but a decreased demand in the market.

As reported by TechCrunch, the company just might reveal an updated version of the Spectacles with augmented reality integration.

Remains to be seen how Snap can regenerate the initial surge in demand for its iconic spectacles. For now, though, their plans aren't going so well, especially given they made a loss last year and hoped Spectacles would help reverse the trend.
