Official says people being imparted training on vegetable cultivation.

FAISALABAD: The agriculture department has started distribution of seed packets under Kitchen Gardening Programme for winter season.

A spokesman for the agriculture department said that each packet contains the seeds of eight vegetables, including radish, carrot, spinach, turnip, coriander, etc. People had been asked to cultivate vegetables till October 30. The department had also started a special campaign to educate and impart training to the people, he added.

Earlier, while speaking at a seminar Punjab University Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan said, “There is a dire need to educate people about the benefits of kitchen gardening.”

He said it was important to introduce modern agricultural technology and practices to meet the food requirement of growing population and boost country’s economy.

Meanwhile, the agriculture official said the experts advised growers to cultivate potato crop in October to get bumper yield. The official pointed out, “Potato is largely used in Pakistan because it is a rich source of proteins, carbohydrates, potassium and sodium.”
