PESHAWAR: The capacity of 60 government-run schools has been enhanced in the Abbottabad and Haripur districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

This was disclosed at a conference on ‘promoting child-friendly school environment’ by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) on Wednesday.

The programme was part of a ‘learning is fun’ project which had been completed in selected schools of the province. The event shared and discussed the interventions made by SPARC and the K-P Education Department over four years. Furthermore, the conference discussed the ways of sustaining the efforts made by the project team, the education department, teachers, children and community members.

SPARC and the education department in Abbottabad and Haripur worked to enhance the capacity of 60 government-run schools. It entailed initiatives which can result in a child-friendly environment, making learning fun for children.

The project helped build the capacity of school staff and children, improve infrastructure, provide school furniture, install playground equipment, strengthen school-community relationships, and development of teaching manuals, multi-grade teaching guides, and quiz books for children and teachers.

Further, over 400 teachers were trained on active teaching-learning techniques, whereas infrastructure of 60 schools was improved and 600 PTC members were trained on managing and supervising schools effectively.

During Wednesday’s conference, teachers from selected government schools were given awards for the competent assessments that were carried out.

K-P Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar said that the provincial government had taken initiatives to improving the education sector, prioritising teachers’ training and creating a student-friendly environment in schools.
