Veteran actor Shabana Azmi truly believes that in Islam, marriage is not made in heaven and is essentially a contract.

Last week, she welcomed the Supreme Court's ruling on triple talaq (divorce) providing that “the judgment is a victory for brave Muslim women in the country.”

Azmi, who is married to writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar, has always been vocal about many issues within society.

It's a contract where wife is not suppose to look after groom's parents nor to cook, wash and look after the house... unless specified in the contract (Nikahnama). Whatever we see today is the tradition being followed through centuries of a particular culture not necessarily of Islam. I don't believe in verbal talaq. When you pen down nikahnama (legal contract) then you pen down talaq also through legal process.
