Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed presented on Tuesday a parliamentary report on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

According to a statement released by the PM House, Syed, who is the chairman of the parliamentary committee on CPEC, called on PM Abbasi at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad.

The senator congratulated Abbasi on assuming office of the prime minister.

"CPEC is a game changer not only for Pakistan but the entire region," the prime minister was quoted as saying in the statement. "CPEC projects are testament to the ever strengthening China – Pakistan relations and will also go a long way in securing a bright future for Pakistan."

CPEC – an opportunity for equitable development

The PM appreciated the committee’s role in building a national consensus over CPEC projects.

The projects, he added, are government’s highest priority, and that he is personally supervising their progress.

CPEC is a 3,000-kilometre network of roads, pipelines and railways to transport goods from Gwadar port to Kashgar in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China.

The $52 billion project intends to rapidly modernise Pakistan’s infrastructure, improve energy ecosystem and establish special economic zones.
