HYDERABAD: Tacitly acknowledging embezzlement in its fuel budget, the Sindh University (SU), Jamshoro has planned to automate its transport to save Rs30 million per month on fuel expenses. The university, in a press statement issued on Monday, claimed to have been pioneering an automated fleet management system to stop fuel theft.

The automation will be implemented by installing a device in all transport vehicles whose fuel is paid for by the university in order to remotely monitor their movement with the help of a mobile phone application. The device will also be equipped with location monitoring, distance measurement and driving alert systems.

"There are potential signs of misappropriation of [fuel worth] Rs90,000 to Rs100,000 per day," said SU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat. He hoped that the new system will help the varsity save between Rs25 million and Rs30 million per month.

The VC said that through the new automated system the varsity administration will be able to secure and keep track of its logistics assets, besides putting an end to corruption.

SU plans to hire a private company to instal the automation system.
