Beyond CPEC: China ready to transfer technology to South Asian countries

Technology transfer centre inaugurated in capital, MoU signed for implementing joint projects

ISLAMABAD: Apart from constructing massive industrial projects and spinning a web of land communication across the South Asian region, China will also transfer technology to states participating in its One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative.

This was stated by China’s Deputy Premier and Minister for Science and Technology Wan Gang as he inaugurated a new sub-center of the China-South Asia Technology Transfer Center (CSTTC) at the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) in Islamabad on Saturday.



The centre would enhance technology transfer and development between the two countries.

The Chinese delegation, led by Dr Gang, arrived in Pakistan for a three-day visit on July 7, to attend the 18th session of the joint committee on the scientific and technical session.



PCSIR Chief Dr Shahzad Alam, while sharing details about the centre, said that under a proposal chalked-out by China, a South Asia Science and Technology Centre would be set up in each regional country.

“As per the proposal, China would provide financial support to Pakistan and other member states for setting up the centres and research laboratories for technology transfer and development,” he said.



Talking about the joint committee on science and technology, he said that around 26 joint research and development projects had been discussed with the Chinese delegation. Dr Alam added that the two sides had also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for implementing the approved projects.

Dr Gang also assured the member states that China was ready to transfer technology to South Asian countries.
