ISLAMABAD:

More than 200 students gathered outside the National Press Club on Thursday and strongly condemned the government’s decision to devolve HEC. They were from various universities including Quaid-i-Azam University, Allama Iqbal Open University, National University of Modern University and Arid Agriculture University, among others.

They carried placards inscribed with the slogans against the HEC’s fragmentation and termed it “a disaster as far as the higher education of the country is concerned”.

“HEC is the real strength of our higher education, which has made significant progress during short span of time,” said Kamran Sher, one of the students.

Jahanzaib Khan, another student, said that the HEC has discovered significant opportunities for the students and devolving the commission would play havoc with their careers. “Prior to the HEC, none of the local universities fared well in the international rankings,” he said.
