Despite some improvement, Pakistan remains one of the least innovative countries in the world, the Global Innovation Index (GII) report 2017 has revealed.

Published by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Pakistan ranked 113 of 127 (as compared to 119 last year) countries surveyed. Switzerland has topped the list for the seventh time in a row.

Similarly, Pakistan's overall score has increased from 22.63 in 2015 to 23.8 this year.

The GII survey is an annual ranking of the innovation capabilities and results of world economies using 81 indicators across a range of themes such as the innovation output sub-index, innovation efficiency ratio, political environment, regulatory environment, business environment,  research, infrastructure, institutions, market and business sophistication, and a commitment to knowledge and creativity.

However, Pakistan’s improvement meant it is no longer the least innovative country in the region as it managed to go a spot ahead of Bangladesh (114).

On the contrary, India maintained its superiority in the region: moved up six spots from last year’s 66th ranking to 60 this year.
