7 Makeup blunders that make you look older

Ladies, ease up on that blush and lose the burgundy lip

Entertainment Desk July 04, 2017

Dark lined eyes, shimmery hues and caked up faces are all fun and games when you are in your 20s. But by the time you hit your 30s, you want to watch out. As compiled from Cheatsheet.com, here are seven grave makeup errors that can make you look older than your years.

1) Dark, thick liners

The purpose of makeup is to accentuate our features but thick, jet-black liners are not always a good idea. As we age our eye lashes thin out and we compensate for it by overdoing our eyeliner. Instead of complementing your eyes, this makeup mistake draws attention to the wrinkles around your eyes and takes away your youthful appeal. An alternative suggestion is to use a brown or a gray eye liner which, in fact, makes the features pop - especially on warm, South Asian skin tones.

2) Strong eyeshadow

There’s nothing wrong with pulling off a little spunk with unconventional lip colours or neon manicures, but the colour palette of our eye shadows should complement your skin tone, unless you want to look outdated, or right out of a pantomime. Nudes and natural hues go a long way and so do dull golds and plums when it comes to our warm, sun-kissed skin. Candy pinks and electric blues are always a big NO!

3) Foundation rule: Less is more

The purpose a foundation serves is to hide your blemishes, even out your complexion and illuminate your face. As long as the product is doing the above-mentioned, there is no need to glaze up your face with layers of product. Not only does too much foundation make your skin look flaky, it wrecks your pores, accelerating the whole aging process. It is advisable to invest more on skin care products than lathering layers of foundation. A more effective alternate to foundation, when it comes to every day makeup, is a tinted moisturiser. Not only will it make your skin smooth and radiant, it is less harsh on your pores too!

4) Ease up on the blush!

Gone are the days when intense rouging and blushing cheeks were vanity must-haves. The shade, texture and tint of the blush can make or break the entire look, so you have to be extremely careful in your product selection and application. Just like foundation, too much powder blush can make your face look flaky. Those of you that fall in the domain of normal to dry skin type, liquid blush is definitely worth investing in - but that too, keep it subtle!

5) Keep your brow game strong

Too much makeup on a face with unkempt eye brows is never a good idea. While trimming, tweezing and maintaining the overall shape of your brows makes your face appear neat and symmetrical, a little makeup for that brow-line doesn’t hurt either. Warning though, never shape your brows with a pencil that is darker than your hair colour because that would be a make-up sin that'll add years to your face!

6) Conservative use of the concealer

Slathering concealer all over your face will cause your skin to crack, making fine lines more visible, which entirely defeats the purpose of this make-up product. Be conservative when it comes to your concealer and apply it only to the inner corner of your eyes or the darker areas of your face.

7) Strong lip hues

Although deep browns and burgundy lip colours are the in thing these days, trust these shades to add a couple of years to your face. What makes you look younger and fresher are either sheer lipsticks or a natural pink pout. Light tinted stains also keep that young look alive while defining and accentuating your lips at the same time.
