11 million more voters on the electoral roll

Gender gap comes in at over 12m in the country, shows ECP electoral data

ISLAMABAD: The number of registered voters in the country crossed 97 million mark after an addition of around 11 million new voters since 2013 general elections, updated data of electoral rolls shows.

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Friday uploaded updated electoral rolls on its website with 54.59 million males and 42.22 million females registered as voters.

The electoral rolls updated till June 29 show gender gap of over 12 million between male and female voters despite tall claims by election authorities to have bridged the gap.

ECP to hold re-election if women barred from voting

This aggregated gender gap of around 12 per cent is much higher if separate data of provinces is analysed. It continues to be the highest in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Balochistan.

In Punjab, of the total 55.82 million registered voters, 31.30 million (56 per cent) are male and 24.51 million (44 per cent) are female, the data shows.

In Sindh, there are 20.64 million registered voters - among them 11.44 million (55 per cent) are males and 9.19 million (45 per cent) are females.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, of the total 14.01 million voters registered so far, 8.0 million (57 per cent) are males and 6.0 million (43 per cent) are females.

Balochistan, the biggest province in terms of land mass, but smallest of the four provinces population-wise, has 3.7 million total voters. Of these, 2.1 million (58 per cent) are males and 1.56 million (42 per cent) are females.

The troubled Fata region bordering Afghanistan has a total of 2.1 million registered voters. Among them 1.3 million (62 per cent) are males and 800,000 (38 per cent) are female voters, having the highest gap in the area administrative unit of the country.

Interestingly, Islamabad also has a 10 percent gap between male and female registered voters. In ICT, of 690,000 voters, 370,000 (54 per cent) are males and 320,000 (46 per cent) females.

Election officials anticipate that the number of voters in the country would easily cross the 100 million mark before the upcoming general elections.
