Death toll in electrocutions, drowning cases rises to 16

KARACHI: Four more people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Karachi on Friday, raising the death toll to 16 in three days.

Among the victims were a seminary student and a teenage girl.

A 22-year-old seminary student, Asad, was electrocuted to death at a hotel in SITE area. He was a student of Jama Binoria Almia. His funeral prayers were offered by Mufti Naeem and his body was later transported to Afghanistan for the burial. A large number of seminary teachers and students attended the funeral prayers.

Separately, a 10-year-old girl was electrocuted to death in the E-1 area of Khokhrapar, Malir. The child’s family say she was electrocuted after touching an electric pole. Her body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for an autopsy. Her family took the body with them without completing medico-legal formalities.

Karachi swamped – and paralysed

A 58-year-old man, who was later identified as Javed Baig, son of Bashir Baig, drowned at Hawke’s Bay Beach. He was a resident of Hyderabad and had gone to the beach with his family for a picnic.

A six-year-old boy, later identified as Rehan, also died after the roof of his house collapsed near Masan Chowk in Keamari. His body was taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, nearly a dozen people, including women and children, were injured after their house collapsed in Manghopir on Thursday night. The victims were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment where doctors termed their condition out of danger.
