New police station for G-10, G-11 and G-12: Street crimes: one station to curb them all

ISLAMABAD:

Criminals in the outer sectors of the city beware: there’s a new police station in the offing. Ramna Police Station is being set up to curtail crimes in sectors G-10, G-11 and G-12.

Even though a police post was established in the area some two years back, the meagre resources of Shalimar Police Station in F-10 resulted in their failure to check the rise in crime. Later, moving against its original purpose, the Ramna post was turned into an office for the Superintendent of Police (Investigations).

Recently, the area police forwarded a proposal to the office of the SSP after senior police officers agreed on the need for a new police station.

According to the proposed plan, the building of the Ramna post will be used for the police station. Additional personnel and resources will be provided to the police station. A summary has been sent to Inspector General of Police Islamabad and Chief Commissioner Islamabad for approval of the plan and the resources required, police sources said.

The police station is likely to be operational in the current week, after the summary is approved.

Previously the three sectors that Ramna Police Station was responsible for fell in the precincts of Shalimar Police Station and Golra Police Station.

“With their thin resources, the Shalimar and Golra police stations were unable to keep adequate check on criminal activities in G-10, G-11 and G-12,” said a police officer.

According to data available with the police, a total of 2,052 incidents of crime were recorded during the last three years in sectors F-10, F-11, E-10, E-11/3, E-11/4, G-10 and G-11. Of these, 738 incidents were reported in 2010. A total of 79 crime incidents, including robberies and burglaries, were reported in G-12 in the past three years, according to police data.

After Ramna starts operating, responsibility of E-11 will be given to Shalimar Police Station, thus bringing the sectors under its jurisdiction to four: F-10, F-11, E-10 and E-11.

Golra Police Station will be responsible for F-12, D-12, G-13, G-14 and E-12.

“’The new police station will share the burden of the existing police stations and will provide better administrative control,” said a police officer, adding that a surge in the population of the area and presence of important installations like the High Court building was another reason for the establishment of the police station.

Sources said the summary asks for 195 personnel for the police station: one inspector, eight sub-inspectors, 16 assistant sub-inspectors, 30 head constables and 140 constables. It also asks for arms, ammunition, anti-riot equipment, tear gas guns and ammunition, a vehicle for the Station House Officer, two Toyota pickups and six motorbikes.
