CHAND RAAT : G-B announces crackdown on aerial firing

Many people have been killed and permanently disabled due to stray bullets fired to express joy

PESHAWAR: People in the habit of firing in the air to express jubilation may find themselves at odds with the law after the Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government banned the tradition of aerial firing on the sighting of Eid moon.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman on Sunday appealed to the people to avoid aerial firing on occasion of Chand Raat and cooperate with police in this regard and directed the law enforcing agency to take stern action against violators.

Chairing a high-level meeting regarding maintaining law and order situation during Eidul Fitr, he directed secretary interior and heads of the law enforcing agencies to ensure foolproof security arrangements besides depute extra personnel to maintain law and order. He said aerial firing on Chand Raat was unacceptable as it may cause deaths and injuries. Many people have been killed and permanently disabled due to stray bullets fired to express joy.
