As security improves: 10 check posts removed in South Waziristan

Two posts still in place to maintain law and order in the agency

WANA: Following improvement in law and order situation, 10 out of 12 security check posts have been removed from the Gomal Zam Road linking Wana with Tank in South Waziristan, it was learnt on Tuesday.

The posts had been established a few years ago due to worsening security situation in the area.

“Security forces have removed 10 check posts on the request of the locals and left only two posts on the main road,” said Colonel Umair while talking to The Express Tribune.



“One of the posts is for registration of people who are visiting the agency, while the other is for snap checking to maintain peace in the area,” Col Umair said.

Answering a question, he said, “Stopping at every check post used to consume a lot of time, but now after the removal of 10 posts, it would hardly take two to three hours to complete the trip, which is good news for travellers as well as traders.”

“The army has provided state-of-the-art technologies on the prescribed two check posts. If a driver does not have his documents while crossing a check post, then the security officials can verify on whose name the vehicle is by typing the chassis and engine numbers on their computer,” he said, adding that in this way crime could be curbed to a major extent.



He also announced that the journalists of the agency were free to report from the agency. Previously the political administration had imposed a ban on reporting from the agency.

Meanwhile, the residents of South Waziristan welcomed the move of the security forces and assured that they would also cooperate with the forces on security and peace in the agency.
