NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted raids across Indian-held Kashmir and New Delhi, the Times of India reported.

According to reports, the raids were carried out after the agency converted a terror funding investigation allegedly involving Hurriyat leaders into a case.

A dangerous new phase of Kashmir conflict

At least 21 locations, including 14 in IoK and seven in Delhi, were raided early Saturday morning, NIA chief Sharad Kumar told TOI. He said the raids were likely to continue.

The locations raided were residences and offices allegedly belonging to Hurriyat members and big hawala traders, suspected to have acted as conduits for terror funding in the disputed valley of Kashmir. In the Indian capital, raids were conducted in Greater Kailash, Pitampura and Ballimaran in Chandni Chowk.

A case registered by the NIA a few days ago claimed that terror funds were used for fueling unrest in Kashmir through stone-pelting incidents and targeting of schools and public property.

NIA also recently questioned Hurriyat leaders Naeem Khan, Farooq Ahmad Dar and Javed Ahmed Baba at Srinagar and Delhi over their alleged participation in collecting and transferring funds through hawala and other channels, the report added.

An estimate of the NIA, the report continued, claimed that Pakistan-based terror groups finance terrorism in IoK by producing millions in donations through their charity organisations. These outfits allegedly collect donations from people in Pakistan and then pass it on to finance terrorism in the valley through their over ground workers, an NIA official asserted.
