Compasses, smartphones and other gadgets have made it easier for Muslims to find the Qibla to offer prayers, but for those interested in taking the non-digital route for knowing the exact direction of the holy Kaaba, the opportunity is just a week away.

In a notification issued on Monday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said the sun will shine directly over the Kaaba on May 28 (Sunday), at exactly 2:18pm, giving Muslims the opportunity to mark its direction for themselves.

Sun will align directly over Kaaba today

“Fix a stick on the ground vertically and observe the shadow of the stick. The shadow line will indicate the Qibla direction,” the notification read.

Anyone facing the sun at the time will be able to accurately know the Kaaba’s direction.

The alignment of the sun over the Kaaba occurs twice every year.

Anjum Arshi | 6 years ago | Reply The notification is confusing. The shadow of the stick at 1418 hours will lie toward East, as the sun will be in the West. Therefore, the direction of the Ka'aba will be actually on the other (non-shadow) side of the stick.
