KARACHI:

The police will be held responsible if the census team is mistreated or attacked, said Sindh Chief Secretary Abdul Subhan Memon.

The sixth housing and population census will start from April 5 in Sindh and the chief secretary met officers in charge of the work from across the province on Friday to discuss the arrangements.

Memon asked the officials to ensure the census team is given full protection in sensitive areas. Monitoring and vigilance rooms should be set up and reports should be shared with him, he said.

“The police will be held responsible if anything happens during the survey,” he said.

Earlier, Provincial Census Commissioner Noor Muhammad Leghari briefed officials about the work. Flood survivors and other homeless people living around shrines, footpaths, shantytowns, bridges and even in open spaces will also be counted by the census team, he said.

The house listing will take place between April 5 and April 19 and the work will continue in either August or September, when individuals and families will be counted. The census teams will hold divisional-level meetings starting Friday in Sukkur, Larkana and other districts before they start, he added.

The meeting was attended by Administration DIG Sardar Majeed, joint commissioner Farooq Baloch and other senior officers.
