MULTAN: A man gunned down his father-in-law and brother-in-law for demanding divorce in Bhakkar on Thursday.

A police official told The Express Tribune that Hamza, 33, resident of Wadhay Wali, and 23-year-old Aqsa, daughter of Atta Muhammad, fell in love with each other and tied the knot against the wishes of their families in October 2016.

He added, “After the marriage, the couple left their hometown and shifted to another city.” The official maintained a few days ago, both Hamza and Aqsa visited Bhakkar to meet their family and friends. “On the day of the incident, the girl’s father Atta Muhammad, and brothers Matiullah and Jahangir, met Hamza and demanded he divorce Aqsa,” he said.

The police official pointed out Atta also threatened Hamza with dire consequences if he did not comply with their demand. “This infuriated Hamza and he took out a pistol and opened fire on them,” he said. As a result, Atta and Matiullah were killed on the spot while Jahangir was injured.

The police shifted the bodies and injured to District Headquarter Hospital, Bhakkar for treatment and legal formalities. Meanwhile, the police said the accused had fled the scene after committing the offence. However, efforts were being carried out to arrest him.

Earlier in April 2017, a man kidnapped and tossed his wife and mother-in-law into the Thal Canal after she demanded that he agree to divorce her. Accused Abdus Sattar had developed differences with his wife, Saima, 26. Saima filed for divorce from Sattar in the Bhakkar Court. However, a day before the hearing, the estranged husband kidnapped both with wife and mother-in-law from Layyah.

In a fit of rage, Sattar pushed his wife into the Thal Canal and fled the scene. Local residents were able to save Saima, but Salma, the mother-in-law, drowned.
