First female judge of Delhi High Court passes away

The first female judge of Delhi High Court passed away on Friday night at her home in Noida, India. She was 86.

According to the Hindustan TimesLeila Seth complained of discomfort due to a mild heart stroke, after which a doctor was called to the home. “Soon after the doctor checked her, she died even before the ambulance could reach our house," her son Shantum said.



Senior consulting neurologist Pushpendra Renjen at Indraprastha Appollo Hospital in Delhi said Seth had been admitted at the hospital for a femur fracture due to a fall, few days before her death. She was discharged on May 2.

Seth began her career in 1959 as an advocate in Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court of India. Twenty years later she was appointed a judge of Delhi High Court.

Apart from being the first female judge of Delhi High Court, she was also the first woman chief justice at the Himachal Pradesh High Court. She was also the first female to top London Bar exam.

The mother of novelist Vikram Seth, she authored her autobiography – 'On Balance' - before publishing, 'We, the Children of India' in 2010 and 'Taking of Justice: People’s Rights in Modern India' in 2014.

Three months before her death, she had donated her body to the Army College of Medical Sciences for medical research.
