Protests erupt after girl falls into open manhole

Father pulled the girl up and rushed her to Allied Hospital where she breathed her last, say police

FAISALABAD: People of Rasool Nagarheld held a demonstration against Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) after a minor girl fell into an open manhole and died.

Police spokesperson said seven-year-old girl Malaika, a resident of Rasool Nagar, fell into the manhole while running towards her father outside their house. The father pulled the girl up and rushed her to the Allied Hospital where she breathed her last.

Following the incident, locals held a demonstration against WASA and chanted slogans to take action against the officials concerned. Later, people dispersed after the police assured them of action against negligent officials.

Meanwhile, WASA Managing Director Syed Zahid Aziz took note of the incident and suspended the assistant director and the sub engineer of the area.
