135 graduating doctors, dentists take oath at convocation

All of them vow to never let any form of discrimination intervene in duty towards patients

KARACHI: As many as 135 female doctors and dentists were awarded their Bachelor’s in Medicine (MBBS) and Bachelor’s in Dentistry (BDS) degrees at the convocation of Sir Syed College of Medical Sciences for girls.

The convocation ceremony took place at Palpa Club Saturday evening.

“The health of my patients will be my first consideration,” pledged the graduates. “I will respect the secrets [that] are confided in me. I will maintain by all means in my power the honour and noble tradition of [the] medical profession. I will not permit consideration of religion, nationality, race, party politics or social standing to intervene [in] my duty [towards] my patients.”



Karachi University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan was the chief guest at the event. “It is believed that the students, on completion of their academic career, will prove to be devoted, dedicated and highly professional doctors,” he said in his speech. “I firmly believe that the need of revival of the ‘Aligarh Spirit’, which embodies the feelings of brotherhood, discipline, zeal to learn and dedication, is felt much more today than ever before. If properly followed by the new entrants to medical profession, it will lead them to the path to success.”

Addressing the students, Brigadier (retd) Prof Muhammad Waseem Khan, the principal of the medical college, said that ‘you will grasp the torch that we bestow upon you’. “Yours is the future and on you the world will come to depend. Please note with special care that this is beginning of your professional studies not the end of studies.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Dr Sadia Naz, the best graduate of MBBS programme and a gold medallist, said that it was overwhelming for her as she made her parents’ dreams come true. Giving a message to the students, she said they need to toil hard to attain the highest level of knowledge.



“I dedicate my gold medal to my parents and my husband who encouraged me to attain [these] achievements,” said Dr Nayab Munawar, the best graduate of BDS and gold medallist with nine distinctions. “People need to challenge themselves in pursuing their career paths for a bright future,” Munawar said as an advice for all the students enrolled in any programme.
