KARACHI: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan lauded efforts of the Sindh Rangers for maintaining law and order in the port city that once struggled against violence and unrest.

Addressing 24th passing out parade ceremony of Pakistan Rangers Sindh in Karachi, on Saturday, Nisar said the paramilitary force made history by bringing peace in the city, offering sacrifices with great courage.

“Security forces of the country have played a vital role in maintaining law and order by effectively addressing internal and external threats,” said the minister.

Paying tribute to those who lost their lives during the ongoing Karachi Operation, he said, 33 Sindh Rangers officials sacrificed their lives and hundreds received injuries while tackling terrorists, extortionists and criminals.

During the last three years, the paramilitary force conducted around 9,500 intelligence-based operations (IBO) in Karachi during which 7,000 terrorists and criminals were arrested, the minister revealed during the ceremony.

Besides the arrests, Nisar continued, huge caches of arms and ammunition were also recovered during those operations.

The interior minister commended the success of Sindh Rangers in thwarting destructive plans and defeating external threats of the enemies and enemies disguised as friends.

Nisar also insisted that the matter of Rangers’ power extension in Sindh should not be politicised and that after every three months, they should be delegated policing powers without any hurdles.

He rejected the narrative that the operation in Karachi was aimed at a particular political party and added, “Rangers conduct operations in Karachi to restore peace in the city.”

It was learnt that the Sindh government had moved a summary pertaining to the extension of the paramilitary force’s powers and stay in the province along with certain customisations. The provincial government wanted to limit Rangers’ powers to a few areas, including action against sectarianism, extortion, target killing and kidnapping for ransom.

The interior ministry, however, turned down their recommendations earlier this week and extended Rangers’ powers and stay in Sindh for 90 days.

Karachi was once hijacked by a man, but today the overall security situation in the city in entirely different, claimed Nisar on Saturday.
