ISLAMABAD: Two men who allegedly mugged a Canadian senator of Pakistani-origin in the capital, have been given into police custody for four days.

The suspects, Atif and Zohaib, had been picked up by the police during an early morning raid in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

Police claim that the two men were riding a motorbike and had snatched the handbag of Canadian Senator Salma Ataullahjan near a restaurant in the Super Market on Tuesday.

Police said they reviewed CCTV footage to track suspects.

“The only thing we could make out from the CCTV cameras was the blue colour of their motorbike’s fuel tank. We then started looking for any suspected street criminals possessing a bike with similar colours, we managed to track them,” a police officer said after making the arrests.

Police subsequently found the same bike standing in the house of one of the suspects in Rawalpindi early on Thursday. The suspect was apprehended in a raid. During questioning, he led police to his accomplice.

The suspects were produced before Judicial Magistrate Adnan Rasheed on Friday. The court allowed the police’s request for four-day physical remand of the suspects.

While the police insist that the suspects in their custody had stolen Senator Ataullahjan’s handbag, they have yet to make any substantial recoveries.

The stolen handbag contained $4,200 and Rs62,000 in cash, a black pearl necklace, along with financial and identification documents.
