PTI, PPP put up a joint front in K-P Assembly

Pass resolution calling for PM’s resignation

PESHAWAR: In a rare move, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa coalition government and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) passed a joint resolution in the provincial assembly demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The house echoed with slogans chanted by lawmakers of PTI and PML-N as PTI lawmaker Dr Haider Ali started reading the resolution in the house on Tuesday.

The resolution was moved by Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) lawmaker and minister for irrigation Sikandar Sherpao and signed by lawmakers of PTI, PPP and Jamat-e-Islami (JI).

The PML-N lawmakers had encircled the speaker’s chair trying to stop the government from moving the resolution; however, their efforts went in vain.



The resolution states, “This house believes that the PM has lost his moral authority and demands his resignation immediately till the final decision of the court.” It added that two of the senior judges declared the Prime Minister to be disqualified and in their remarks the judges were of the view that the prime minister could not prove and justify his assets and asked for further enquiry.

The deputy speaker Dr Mehar Taj Roghani suspended the question and answer hour to pass the resolution. The house proceedings were also attended by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak.

The house also passed the K-P Ehtesab Commission (second amendment) bill 2017, amid the opposition’s uproar for ignoring their amendments in the bill. The amendment reduces the number of commissioners of the commission from 5 to 2, and their appointment would be made on the recommendations of a selection committee. However, it allows the incumbent commissioners to serve till the expiry of their tenure.

Under the amended law, a selection committee comprising of judges of the Administrative Committee of the High Court and the Advocate General will appointment the commission’s director general, prosecutor general, director internal monitoring and public complaints wing.

The deputy speaker also over saw the oath of PTI’s newly elected lawmaker Zar Gul Khan from PK-62 Kohistan.
