Over 50 suspects detained by police

Two PML-N local leaders arrested for exploding firecrackers to celebrate Panama verdict

KARACHI: As the Rangers wait for the extension of their special powers, the Karachi police continued with action against the criminal elements operating in the metropolis. The police detained over 50 suspects during overnight raids in different parts of District Central of Karachi.

The raids were carried out in parts of District Central, including Khamiso Goth in New Karachi, DT Chowk, Roshan Bagh and Power House areas of Gulberg in the early hours of Friday. A large contingent of the Gulberg division police participated in the raids. The law enforcers conducted door-to-door search operation and detained nearly 50 suspects who were shifted to different police stations to initiate legal proceedings. Gulberg SP Bashir Brohi said the criminal records of the detained suspects were being verified, adding that those who were found innocent would be released while those found guilty would be dealt with law accordingly.

Sources in the police said over a dozen suspects were released after they were found innocent during the initial course of interrogation while cases were registered against those found guilty during investigations.

Meanwhile, two local leaders and three workers of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) were taken into custody from Sharae Noor Jahan. The PML-N leaders were identified as Afsar Ali Khan and Khalid Mumtaz Advocate. Mumtaz is also a former general secretary of the Karachi Bar Association. The police officials said they along with the workers were arrested for exploding firecrackers to celebrate the Supreme Court verdict of the Panama case.
