ISLAMABAD: Police nabbed an absconder who had allegedly shot dead a police official while escaping a police raid on Friday.

Imran Akhtar, the suspect, had opened fire on a raiding police party at his house during an early morning raid on April 14.

He was sought by the Chakwal police in an attempted murder case and had been on the run ever since.

A Chakwal police team along with Noon police officials raided the house he was living in at Jhangi Syedan in the wee hours of Friday. Police say the suspect opened fire on the raiding party and shot Chakwal Police ASI Akhtar Hayat in the forehead, killing him on the spot. Police also opened fire but the suspect and his five relatives managed to escape.

Noon police had booked Akhtar for murder and his relatives for attempted murder and obstruction of police.

On Monday, the police succeeded in arresting the prime suspect in Dhok Malyaran near Jhangi Syedan. The suspect will be produced before a judicial magistrate today, Tuesday.

Noon police said other suspects including Akhtar’s brothers who had shot at police during the raid on Friday were still at large.
