QUETTA: One child was killed and two others injured in a cracker blast in Quetta's Jinnah Town area on Monday.

The child was identified as Hussain Baksh. Rescue teams and security forces have reached the site of the blast. Further investigations are underway.

Quetta is among the most volatile cities of the mineral-rich Balochistan, with police personnel regularly targeted, apparently to fail efforts aimed at restoring law and order in the province.

Security forces foil major terrorist act planned for Quetta

Pakistan has been battling insurgency since shortly after it decided to ally with the US following its invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. Violence has declined in recent years following a series of military offensives in the northwest border areas as well as concerted efforts to block the militants’ sources of funding.

But the remnants of militant groups are still able to carry out periodic bloody attacks, particularly in the northwest.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
