A fight broke out between activists of the Peoples’ Student Federation and the PPP Youth Wing. Members of both wings started beating each other up with chairs despite Shah’s repeated requests to remain quiet.
Some workers also sustained minor injuries as the groups started shouting slogans, forcing Shah to cut short his speech.
According to party officials, the dispute arose when two people argued over who will get to sit on a chair.
The event was organised by the PPP to pay homage to those party workers of Karachi’s central district who have been targeted since 1990.
Shah had earlier announced Rs10.5 million for the development of the central district and one plot each for the families of victims.
He said that PPP is becoming popular as two of its MNAs have secured seats in the Punjab by-elections. Other party members, including Najme Alam, Rashid Rabbani, Saeed Ghani and Shahla Raza also spoke at the occasion.
