QUETTA:

The Balochistan government announced on Friday compensation of Rs500,000 for all the families of coalminers who died in the Sorange tragedy last week.

The compensation was announced by provincial Minister for Labour and Manpower Moulvi Sarwar.

Talking to The Express Tribune Moulvi Sarwar said that the government had earlier fixed Rs200,000 as compensation for labourers, but this amount has now been raised to Rs500,000.

“The (labour) department is trying to resolve problems faced by workers, but it is also the responsibility of labourers and miners to file complaints with the authorities concerned,” he added.

When he was asked why the victims’ families had to wait two or three years to get the compensation money, he said that flaws “do exist and problems cannot be solved by any single individual overnight but we are trying our best to enforce labour laws”.

Meanwhile, provincial Minister for Mines and Minerals Abdul Rehman Mengal visited the Sorange coalmine.

“An inquiry committee has been set up and whoever is found guilty will be severely punished,” he told the miners.
